Basic Concepts Assessment | Baseline & Progress Monitoring
Kitty Cat's Book of Basic Concepts is designed to informally assess students' receptive understanding of 34 basic concepts for baseline and progress monitoring. Unlike intervention materials that teach one concept at a time, this resource is designed to help you quickly identify students' understanding of individual basic concepts and monitor growth over time.
The concepts are organized into five categories:
Descriptive
Spatial
Quantitative
Comparative & Superlative
Sequential
Two equivalent versions of the assessment (Book A and Book B) are included and may be used interchangeably for baseline testing and progress monitoring.
Each concept page includes five receptive prompts. The first prompt also includes an optional expressive extension that targets the opposite concept (e.g., receptive: on; expressive: off), providing an opportunity to gather additional expressive language information during the assessment.
The included data collection sheet makes it easy to document baseline performance and monitor student progress over time.
This resource can also be used as a small-group knowledge check (up to five students) to quickly identify concepts that may benefit from additional instruction or practice.
